Fall 1938: Our special guest(s) this month greet Shirley at the American Legion Convention in California. Bit from a 1939 Screen Guide gossip item – "Closest thing Shirley Temple has ever had to romance is her great admiration for that handsome, churlish radio favorite, Charlie McCarthy. Few evenings back, Shirley invited Charlie (and Edgar Bergen) to dinner. 'You a movie star?' Charlie insolently asked. 'You get fan letters like I do?' Shirley did an immediate burn-up. Then she remembered that no matter how smart Charlie McCarthy is, he's still a dummy. So they traded autographs and parted friends. Now it's said that the real reason Shirley rushed off to Honolulu is that her house is full of termites. Who started the rumor nobody knows, except W.C. Fields."
